Animal Emergency Clinic of the Fraser Valley

Surgery
We understand that surgery can be a challenging experience for both you and your pet, especially when it’s required to address an emergency illness or injury. These situations often demand quick decisions under stressful circumstances. At AECFV, we are committed to providing you with a clear understanding of why a particular procedure is necessary, what it involves, proper post-operative care, and any additional information you need to feel confident in making the best decision for your pet.
Our team of highly trained veterinarians and skilled veterinary technicians is dedicated to achieving the best possible outcomes for your pet. We take the time to present all available options, ensuring you are fully informed and prepared to make the decision that feels right for you and your pet.
Among the many procedures performed by our ER doctors, the most common surgeries include exploratory procedures, foreign body removals, and cesarean sections.
Every surgery performed at AECFV includes the following:
Anesthesia and Monitoring
Anesthesia and cardiovascular monitoring are critical components of every surgery we perform. That’s why your pet benefits from access to state-of-the-art anesthetic administration and cardiovascular monitoring equipment, guided by advanced protocols designed to ensure their safety and well-being.
Each anesthesia plan is tailored specifically to your pet, taking into account various factors such as the type of procedure, preexisting conditions, blood test results, age, breed, and previous anesthetic experiences.
During surgery, a trained veterinary technician continuously monitors your pet’s vital signs, including oxygen levels, blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, and body temperature, using state-of-the-art equipment to ensure optimal care.
Pain Management
At AECFV, we believe that identifying and relieving pain is essential to your pet's recovery and overall well-being. Pain management is a cornerstone of our pre-, intra- and post-surgical care, and we take a multimodal approach to ensure the best outcomes for your pet.
We utilize advanced techniques and medications, including continuous rate infusions for medications and IV fluids, epidurals, regional blocks, and both oral and injectable options. By combining these methods, we can develop a tailored pain management plan specific to your pet’s condition and level of pain. At discharge, we may also provide additional pain medications for home use, along with clear instructions on their proper administration.
Our proactive multimodal approach to pain management prioritizes your pet's comfort, helping them recover as smoothly and comfortably as possible.
Postoperative Care
As your pet recovers from surgery, they will be closely monitored by our dedicated medical team. Our post-surgical care includes warming therapy, ongoing pain management, regular vital sign checks, and vigilant monitoring to ensure a smooth recovery.
When your pet is ready to go home, we will provide detailed instructions on how to care for them after surgery or any other procedures. We’re also available to address any questions or concerns that may arise once your pet is home. With our 24/7 availability, you can always reach out to us for support whenever you need it.
