We provide the following emergency treatments:

Blood & Plasma Transfusions

Administering whole blood or its components, such as packed red blood cells and plasma, through transfusions is vital for treating various medical conditions like certain poisonings, clotting disorders, and severe blood loss from trauma. Without this lifesaving procedure, animals in critical distress cannot deliver oxygen to their organs or remove toxins, leading to rapid organ failure and death.

As a 24-hour emergency veterinary hospital, AECFV is dedicated to maintaining a supply of whole blood and its components for urgent situations. We have the diagnostic tools to quickly identify conditions requiring a transfusion and determine your pet's blood type prior to treatment.

Through our AECFV Blood Services program, we supply blood products to referring veterinary practices that may need emergency blood for hospitalized patients.

Oxygen Therapy

In an emergency, it’s crucial to address blood loss and ensure the patient is receiving enough oxygen. This may involve clearing airways or, in many cases, administering supplemental oxygen therapy to stabilize the animal.

At AECFV, we offer various oxygen therapy options based on the patient’s needs, including cage, hood, and nasal oxygen. For small birds, exotics, and pocket pets, we have three incubator-like units, while medium to larger dogs receive oxygen through a specially designed kennel. Although most animals only require oxygen for a short time, we maintain a large supply to provide continuous therapy around the clock.

Avian, Exotic & Pocket Pets

Avian, exotic, and pocket pets require a facility with the equipment and specialized training to provide them with the care they need. At AECFV, we will not turn away a pet in distress, but please note that due to the varying degrees of expertise, the type of exotic, and the doctor on duty, we may suggest other destinations for treatment options. We will make every attempt to diagnose and treat your exotic pet, although in a limited capacity.

Advanced Pain Management

Pain management is a critical aspect of surgery and a valuable tool in addressing injuries, and a wide range of acute and chronic illnesses. At AECFV, we employ a multimodal approach to pain management, combining advanced techniques and medications for optimal effectiveness. This includes continuous rate infusions for medications and IV fluids, epidurals, regional nerve blocks, and both oral and injectable medicines.

By leveraging a variety of methods and medications, we can develop a tailored pain management protocol specifically designed for your pet’s condition and pain level. When appropriate, we may also provide take-home pain medications with detailed instructions to ensure your pet remains comfortable after treatment and stabilization.

Our proactive approach ensures comprehensive pain management, helping to keep your pet as comfortable as possible throughout their recovery.
